Stones (circled) was pulled away by Luis Suarez (bottom) while Kolarov being caught out of position meant City had to concede too much space with Neymar roaming free. Kolarov does a good job of tracking Iniesta but the ball bounces unkindly into the space left by City

Fernandinho slips at the crucial time as Gundogan and Sterling (marked above) turn to run away in anticipation of his pass that never came. That meant they were held in position and Messi is given an ocean of space to run into while Stones ball watches 
From that point on, Messi has the simple job of rounding Bravo in goal and slotting home . 
Kevin de Bruyne had turned over position, leaving Messi with a clear run on an exposed City defence. Otamendi (circled) was left horribly out of position as was substitute Clichy (top of shot), leaving Messi with option of dribbling either side of Kolarov or passing to Suarez

Rather than passing to Suarez, Messi cuts inside. Otamendi can now react, but it's too late

Suarez does an excellent job of reading Gundogan's poor pass and moves to intercept it

Messi is the first to react and gets beyond Stones to get into space and score his third goal
 

 

 

By the final minutes City were fatigued and their defensive shape had gone. They'd also been compromised by Fernandinho's decision to try and tackle Messi, which he paid for
 
Neymar was left isolated against Stones and sent him one way then the next to free up space
